Volume 7 of the In Brief series of Books for Busy People offers a glimpse into the world of the Mughal Empire, which for some two hundred years ruled large swathes of Northern and Central India.
Much has been written about the final years of Mughal rule from a British perspective, but The Mughal Empire aims to provide an overview of its full history, from its establishment in 1526 to its decline following the Indian Uprising of 1857 and the birth of the British Raj.
Beginning with the Turkic-Mongol warlord Babur and his invasion of Hindustan, and ending with the last Emperor, Bahadur Shah II, this book brings to life the minority Islamic elite known as the Mughals - their rule over a majority Hindu population but also their patronage of the arts and literature, and the magnificent monuments and mausoleums - including the Taj Mahal - which were commissioned during their reign.
As with other books in the In Brief series, this book is aimed at the general reader who wants to understand a particular historical topic but does not have the time or inclination to read a heavy academic tome.
The Mughal Empire by Anne Davison is available from Amazon in both paperback and ebook formats.
